Summary of Job Responsibilities: Researches, consults, and provides recommendations to Chief Underwriter on compliance and development issues related to underwriting, managing, and implementing procedures required to assure compliance with state and federal regulations. Acts as project lead when necessary. Provides underwriting expertise for life insurance products. The following duties cover what are generally believed to be principal and essential functions of the job. Specific circumstances may allow or require some people assigned to the job to perform a somewhat different combination of duties. 1. Possesses and applies comprehensive life product knowledge and underwriting expertise to hold secondary approval authority for large case decisions. 2. Assists in developing underwriting quality and service for the Operation. Assists in developing and implementing necessary changes to underwriting practice and procedures. 3. Provides consultation and advice to Chief Underwriter on the underwriting requirements as new products are developed. 4. Provides advice and direction to the Underwriting Technical Experts in recommending possible rescission based on information at the time of policy issue. 5. Assists in implementing underwriting criteria for life insurance products sold through alternate distribution systems. 6. Provides direction and advice to the Operations team managers on requests for exceptions to underwriting decisions on large cases. 7. Researches compliance issues related to underwriting, managing and implementing procedures required to assure compliance with state and federal legislation. 8. Consults with the Underwriting Technical Experts and provides direction on issues related to the underwriting process. 9. Maintains relationship with field sales personnel in helping to keep sales force informed of policies and procedures enacted by Chief Underwriter. 10. Delivers training on life insurance underwriting to underwriters under direction of Chief Underwriter. 11. Identifies training needs for underwriters and assists in the development and delivery of the training. 12. Based on evaluation of expressed or implied need for study or research by Chief Underwriter, management information, underwriting corrective actions, etc. , determines requirements, effect, and scope. Develops details and recommends new programs or concepts to address a perceived need. 13. Develops position papers and staff reports aimed at deciding the direction of future underwriting related projects, plans, and programs. Conducts cost/benefit analyses as needed to evaluate and support recommendations provided to Chief Underwriter. 14. Under advisement of Chief Underwriter, directs research in determining validity of new underwriting concepts, practices, inspection or risk evaluation services being used or recommended for use by staff offices, regions, or insurance support organizations. 15. Job Requirements:

Education: Undergraduate studies in insurance, risk management, finance, biologic sciences, or business management. Participation in, or attainment of, professional/technical studies or designation such as CLU, FLMI or FALU.

Experience: Ten years of life insurance underwriting, preferably including experience as a Technical Expert-Life Underwriting.

Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of life underwriting principles and practices, including basic contract law.

In-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical and non-medical risks as they relate to life insurance.

Interpretation of attending physicians reports, medical examinations, and medical test results.

In-depth understanding of financial underwriting, as it pertains to life insurance.

Knowledge of processing and information systems which support underwriting and new business submission.

Knowledge of underwriting design and project management.

Knowledge of managing and interpreting underwriting results.

Working Conditions: Physical Requirements:

Normal office environment. Travel to agency states as needed.
