JOB SUMMARY: The Senior Consultant, Enterprise Portfolio Planning and Management contributes to the effective management of Nationwide's portfolio investment through one of the following ways: Consulting: Acts independently or leads a consulting service team to provide insights to business segments and segment planning teams regarding Business Transformation Council portfolios ' alignment to strategic priorities and objectives, and assists in developing and maintaining multi-year plans for these segments. Maintains trusted advisor relationships and deepening business knowledge with planning partners across the enterprise. Also practices business process management competency. Participates in major process modeling, analysis, and design efforts. Responsible for providing business performance management, organizational design, and business risk management capabilities to formulate pragmatic, forward facing, and actionable business transformation plans. Responsible for establishing a common understanding of the business environment in which a project (or solution) must be defined, designed, created deployed, used and supported. Requires in-depth understanding of business processes, systems, organizational structure, and industry requirements. Analytics: Acts independently or leads an analytic service team to contribute to effective portfolio management by conducting analysis understanding how the current portfolio aligns to segment strategies, determining portfolio performance against goals and developing recommendations to portfolio decision makers. Also includes leading or directing business case template maintenance and data management tasks to ensure accuracy and availability of data for analysis. Capability Development and Continuous Improvement:: Acts independently or leads a team to define concepts, strategies, processes, roles, information structures, and toolsets to enable a repeatable approach to translating enterprise strategy into specific work plans. Solutions are documented in a variety of ways, including: • Core Purpose Statements, • Strategic Change Agendas, • Decision Frameworks, • Information Models, • Transition Roadmaps, • Decision Support Capability Definitions and Schedules, • Process Requirements, • Core process descriptions including people, process, and technology components.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Director/AVP/VP, Enterprise Portfolio Planning and Management.

CORE JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide recommendations for business partners on selecting and managing business change investments (i.e. “the portfolio”) to achieve strategic priorities.

  2. Lead or direct others in the development of key analytics, the application of the Integrated Planning framework and/or the development of new or revised Enterprise Portfolio Planning and Management processes.

  3. Analyze portfolio performance against goals and identify recommendations for improvement.

  4. Act as a Subject Matter Expert to support the operations of Enterprise Portfolio Planning and Management and related job professions as needed.

  5. Understand current state of Enterprise Portfolio Planning and Management services and drive continuous improvement or transformation as necessary to maximize value.

  6. Ensure the effective operations of ongoing portfolio processes.

  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Undergraduate degree in a business or analytic field preferred. Advanced degree preferred.

Experience: Ten or more years related experience in portfolio management, internal/external consulting or similar field. Product or business unit specific experience preferred.

Knowledge: Working knowledge of statistical/financial analysis, financial statement and budget preparation, and Enterprise-wide business operations. Working knowledge of GAAP and statutory accounting practices and insurance/financial services business requirements. Consulting experience and demonstrated knowledge of consulting best practices. Business Case development with emphasis on benefit planning and realization. Process and data flow modeling. Project management concepts and techniques.

Skills/Competencies: Strong written, oral and presentation based communication skills for internal and external contacts, including senior executives. Expertise in application of strategic frameworks and analysis to evaluate business problems. Experience leading requirements gathering workshops, running labs, or facilitating meetings. Ability to influence without authority and gain business partner buy in. Ability to set engagement objectives and scope; develop work plans for components of engagements, coordinate activities between work streams and identify changes in Executive presence. Strategic mind-set and a demonstrated aptitude for analytics. Expertise in telling a compelling business story through analysis. Ability to lead project and special studies teams. Ability to aggregate finding across business segments to a group level. Ability to interpret complex financial information and provide consultative insights. Excels in leading through ambiguity to deliver value. Ability to execute key Enterprise/Business Architecture concepts, and incorporate architecture into analysis. Ability to grasp abstract concepts in order to develop and communicate solutions to ambiguous problems. Expertise in strategic analysis and financial modelling. Significant experience with the entire Microsoft Office Suite, including intermediate to advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills. Ability to operate related financial, statistical and business software. Ability to perform well under pressure to meet time-sensitive deadlines. Takes ownership of deliverables, including thorough review to deliver reliable and insightful work products which build credibility. Expectation of consultative acumen, commensurate with skill level, demonstrated through the individual’s ability to manage client relationships, diagnose client needs, recommend appropriate client solutions, implement recommended solutions, build consensus, facilitate client learning and permanently improve organizational effectiveness.

Working Conditions: Normal working conditions. Must be able to work outside of the normal work day including occasional weekends to meet deadlines and complete special projects. Must be able to handle a high volume/large variety of work within strict deadlines and the related stress.

This role is part of the Integrated Planning and Expense Management organization in the Property and Casualty company. This role will be heavily engaged in working across the P&C organization, and with our supporting business partners, to deliver upon P&C's goals.

The successful candidate will lead cross-functional efforts impacting both P&C business models and operating models. More specifically, this role will be responsible for both leading and supporting activities to drive growth in the current business model, while leveraging the Integrated Planning methodology to transform P&C businesses to their future state business models. Additionally, the candidate will lead and support the reduction of expenses from our current operating model, while enabling P&C to adapt to a longer-term, digitalized operating model.

The selected candidate must be goal-oriented, persistent, driven to achieve positive results, a positive influence on others and able to handle complex and ambiguous situations. The selected candidate must be capable of routinely interacting at senior-executive levels with a results-oriented mentality, high degree of executive presence, strong thought leadership and emotional intelligence that increases the credibility of Integrated Planning and Expense Management team.
